SARGEIST - LET THE DEVIL IN

LET THE DEVIL IN
MORIBUND

I have already reviewed this album for Currents but since I had done a newer one for another site that wasn’t used I decided to publish it here. Enjoy.

For good or bad Sargeist have always travelled under my radar. Never have I witnessed the grandeur of "Disciple of the Heinous Path" or "Satanic Black Devotion". Never, as far as I can remember, until now.

And what a good way to start! There's not much around as refreshing as a cup of black coffee in the morning as "From the Black Coffin Lair", the third song on "Let the Devil In". Heavy on the mid paced hooks it is. Other highlights are "Nocturnal Revelation" and of course the title track. In fact, it's tough to find a soft spot on this one, the band's third album.

Sargeist, as much as they like to break out in speed everyone once in a while, rely heavily on the midpaced madness. I'm glad they do as this album flows really well from start to finish. Sounds complete and not as much a clutter of songs as it sounds like a book with 10 chapters. Each one fitting nicely in line with the previous one.

They've gone over the most difficult mountain, the sophomore one, and with their third full moon it is obvious that Sargeist is a band that one has to keep an eye out for in the future.

DESULTORY - COUNTING OUR SCARS

Those that listened to Death Metal back in the early nineties will remember Desultory. The ones that didn't probably will not remember them so much as the kvlt never really caught Desultory. Perhaps I'm wrong but I've never seen "Into Eternity" go for crazy amounts on eBAY. In short, it's more likely than not that if you're under 25 this album will be your first proper introduction to Desultory.

"Counting Our Scars" is a fine introduction. No, scratch that, it's a damn good introduction to Desultory. Okay, the album hasn't really settled in here yet but if we just speak about comebacks in general this album ranks up with the best of them. The album is classic Desultory but at the same time "modern". It's classic Swedemetall with a hint for melody that people will fall head over heels for. Well, people that have a soft spot for this, anyway.

In the age of retrogression "Counting Our Scars" stands above many, if not most. Check it out if you want a modern tasting mid-nineties buffet.

BLACK WITCHERY - INFERNO OF SACRED DESTRUCTION

BLACK WITCHERY

HELLS HEADBANGERS

The men have arrived! The big men have arrived! This, Inferno of Sacred Destruction, is the third deathstrike of the unholy trinity that is known as Black Witchery and consists of Impurath on bass & vocals, Tregenda on guitars & Vaz on drums.

The main ingredients are all the same really but there are changes. Perhaps most notable right away are the vocals of Impurath. His screams are a bit more rough now than back on Desecration of the Holy Kingdom and Upheaval of Satanic Might. There's no power lost, far from it, perhaps even more power in it. It feels like he's right in your face, and there's a heavy "fuck you all!" feeling in it.

Before putting Inferno… on I was hoping it was a bit more like Desecration… than Upheaval… when it comes to the production and thankfully it is. Upheaval… was chaos whereas this is symmetric violence.
There are changes here and there, small but noticeable, and the cover of Conqueror's "Kingdom Against Kingdom"… Well, it just seals the deal, really.

Black Witchery has always been there continuing what bands like Conqueror, Blasphemy and Beherit began. On Inferno… its like there's a bit more Beherit than before, a bit of the ritual feeling one feels when listening to Drawing Down the Moon. It lies in the background, not upfront. It's in the details.

What we have here is something I would have loved twenty years ago, 13 years old and just beginning to grasping the concept of Death Metal & all things devil worship. OK, I still like it but the love isn’t there. This is good stuff but...

...Crucifyre gives us thrashdeathmetal with enough occult references to catch the attention of the young and aimless. This music corrupts the young. Catchy enough to keep you interested and namedropping enough of the gods mentioned in “The Goetia” to get your riled up in all things black candles and altar.

This band is armed to the teeth with guys that were there in the beginning! When the old gods were young and the Necronomicon had not been used to death in Death Metal! When Venom were one of a kind!

Do you want devil worship Thrash Metal? If you are looking for the exact opposite of what Deathspell Omega seems to be all about then look no further. Horror Movie Satanic Metal ov Thrashing Death is here! HAIL SATAN! BELIAL PRAISE!

SERPENT NOIR - SANGUIS XI

DAEMON WORSHIP PRODUCTIONS

Serpent Noir is an international conspiracy conspired by, amongst others, members of Embrace the Thorns & Ofermod. I can only imagine that their intention is to channel forth the Draconian Current through the medium of occult Black Metal.

Serpent Noir is all about the mid paced madness. There are outbursts of high velocity like on "Invocation of Sorath" but most of the time it's rather laid back blackish Death Metal.

Although Michayah of Ofermod handles the drums in Serpent Noir and both bands blend together Death Metal & Black Metal, I don't think he is responsible for the drums on "Sanguis XI". According to the band this release has been ready since 2006 and I believe Michayah joined later on.

So, rest assured that Serpent Noir is in no way a copy, or a continuation, of Ofermod. I am sure, however, that the people that have been waiting anxiously for another release from Ofermod since 2008's "Tiamtü" will find the wait a bit easier as both bands seem to go down similar paths both musically and spiritually.

When I first heard about Cough I was pretty sure this was some new wave indie stuff. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered the sludge and filth these guys are all about!

Formed five years ago and already on their second album these guys really capture the drug-filled atmosphere bands like Electric Wizard have become known for. It's not surprising that some call Cough U.S.A.'s answer to Electric Wizard. There are striking similarities but in some parts Cough surpass Electric Wizard when it comes to the filth.

I reckon it's going to be a close call between Ritual Abuse and Black Masses who will get more teens to abuse narcotics while worshiping grim lords. Cough makes it clear that if Electric Wizard is going to keep it's ass on the drugthrone it's going to have to beef up the hits from the bong.

Cough has a split with The Wounded Kings out next month through Forcefield Records. Cough’s side contains a single track lasting nineteen minutes. I’m pretty sure that might be just enough to send a few over the edge.

Moon, like anything else the man behind it, Cezar, touches, becomes an institution. A legend of its own. For the last twenty years he has building a tower of Blackdeath and with each release he has added a new brick.

With Lucifer's Horns it's business as usual. Although eleven years have passed since Satan's Wept this album feels like a continuation of what already was in motion, not a new beginning. What Moon gives us here is a glimpse into quality Polish Blackdeath. Fans of Cezar's earlier work will not be disappointed and the newcomers will yearn to know more.

RISE ABOVE

Back in the day the cult of the blue oyster told us that there was no need to fear the reaper. Scorpions told us about the sails of Charon and after the battle a nation of funeral arose!
Those were grim days and grim days often breed ghouls. Most ghouls dwell in burial grounds and live a rather silent existence but it seems this ghoulpack had a different upbringing.

It has been said that when young, these ghouls grew up reading the pages the local pastor thought were unfitting for his congregation. Soon afterwards the congregation started loosing members until only an empty church remained. No priest, no congregation, only defecation. Let's be realistic, even ghouls have to take a shit.

The consumption of the being grants you it's abilities and our ghouls were quick to put this in practice. What better way to attract meals to you than through the medium of popular music? They claim they are doing this for The Devil and so might appear, but I am sure that when the masks come off people will realize that the joke's on them, the exits locked and no way out.

When there is no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth and perform Hard Rock.

SARGEIST - LET THE DEVIL IN

Eleven years into it's existence Sargeist vomits up "Let the Devil In.” An album with a title suspiciously like the title of a movie I just recently watched.

Let's forget about that, though. Let's focus on the music. Let's focus on the filth these corpsepainted hellpriests regurgitate upon the innocent masses.
Sargeist are not the most extreme band out there, their type of Black Metal has an edge but it also has a hook that digs deeper than those of its siblings. "From the Black Coffin Lair" cuts the deepest, followed by the "Twilight Breath of Satan" and "Let the Devil In.”

Sargeist are all about the medium rare Black Metal. Not as raw as the old Warloghe stuff but not as polished as Thyrane's. In short: This is music for people that sleep with their spikes on.

SAD/WARWULF - WALKING THE PATHS OF DESPAIR

SAD / WARWULF
WALKING THE PATHS OF DESPAIR

Releases like these are the reason I more often than not get the feeling that the underground is overcrowded. Two bands, one Greek, the other American, attempt to show us how rude, crude and above all, raw, Black Metal should be played.

Greece's Sad start the split and during "Mass Annihilation" and "Fade to Infinity" the band manages to evoke a bit of interest within these old veins of mine. America's Warwulf, on the other hand, doesn't have the same effect on me. I'm sure a lot of people into technical precision and crystal clear sound will scream out in anger and despair if this hits their senses. After all, Warwulf is raw "true fucking 90's Black Metal."

Occasional glimpses of greatness covered with layers upon layers of sloppy musicianship and lousy production.

OCTOBER TIDE - A THIN SHELL

Back in the days of yore, when Katatonia briefly fell into slumber, October Tide arose and three waves fell to the shore. These three waves were supposed to be all that would be heard from the band but things change and, with the departure of Fred Norrman from Katatonia, October Tide is back.

Anyways, what we have here is classic October Tide which in turn is classic Katatonia. This is a popped up version of the second era of Katatonia. Forget the good old melancholic days of "Dance of December Souls" and lean more towards "Brave Murder Day."

All in all not a bad album and a good choice for anyone that thinks good things shouldn't come to an end.

MALHKEBRE - PROSTRATION

Black arts lead to everlasting sins. It's a proven fact. Back in the days of Varathron & Necromantia I doubt few people would have believed Black Metal to become as perverse as Malhkebre have made it.

On "Prostration" Malhkebre present us with four songs of devil worshiping Black Metal that were originally released on vinyl by Battlesk'rs back in 2006.
These songs don't sound old or outdated. They have as much impact today as they did when they first saw the light of day.

Malhkebre create Black Metal that is dangerous. It stings and goes all over the place, both musically and emotionally. This is music for the people that enjoy the French’s perverse take on Black Metal. This is music for the people that wish they’d had the chance to taste a bit of Dead’s brain.

BLACK ANVIL - TRIUMVIRATE

BLACK ANVIL
TRIUMVIRATE
Relapse

I never heard Kill Your Idols but apparently they were legendary. Why am I mentioning that band? Because the members of Black Anvil all used to play in it, that's why. Kill Your Idols was NYHC and perhaps, if you're like me, images of Agnostic Front, Warzone, Freddy Madball and Merauder pop into your head when somebody mentions that.

Black Anvil are not NYHC, though. No, if I had to peg Black Anvil anywhere I would say they were melodic Heavy Black n' Roll. They offer us a medley of some of the best moments of melodic Black Metal 'til now laced with a bit of groove and bite. If you look hard I'm sure you can find a bit of core there too.

Triumvirate is one of those albums that is good to use if you want to get people to listen to more extreme music than they are listening to at that moment. It's a safe record that will warm every newcomer's heart.

SAHG - III

With albums like "III" no description, however grand, will do them justice. With "III" Sahg have created the ultimate Heavy Metal / Rock N' Roll album of 2010. I'd nominate Olav Iversen as this year's best vocalist, as well.

Sahg have matured since "II", getting even more rock n' roll than last time and creating music that people can and most likely will move to. Without hurting one another.

If you can't start at the beginning start with "Downward Spiral." It's my personal favorite and that organ solo is awesome!

ALGAION - EXTHROS

Yeah, it's the same Algaion that back in '95 released "Oimai Algeiou" through Full Moon Productions. The Swedes also released an ep and another album through Wounded Love before fading into obscurity around the turn of the century.

They have risen now and with their third album through a third label, Pulverised, which has been picking up a band or two that did good back in the days most don't remember, for one reason or another.

It seems Algaion have forgotten very little in the nine years since their last ep was released. Rather classic & melodic Swedish deathblack is the thing here, although there's a hint of Greece here as well, especially with the Rotting Christ / Thou Art Lord covers this album includes. I will not go so far as to say that the greek influence is ruling here, it shows without a doubt where Algaion come from. Algaion are Swedish and this album shows it clearly. If you can't get enough check it out!

CAUCHEMAR - LA VIERGE NOIRE

CAUCHEMAR
LA VIERGE NOIRE
Nuclear War Now!

There's been a real resurgence of everything Heavy Metal during the last couple of years. Band after band dropping the screeching thunderscreams of Black Metal for more subtle sonic blasts to the old godz of Metal. Gone are the days of The Valknött, enter the realm of fuzz.

Cauchemar probably don't belong to that group but it wouldn't matter if they did, it would change "La Vierge Noire" in any way.

Five songs that pass us by too quickly. "La Vierge Noire" only lasts for five songs. Five songs of nostalgic Heavy Metal doom that go by too fast and leave you wanting more!

What sets Cauchemar apart from most of the other NWoRHM is the fact that they don't sing in English. Cauchemar deliver the hymns in French and as well as giving the young ones a chance to hear how the bands back in the day did it, they also show them that not only the English can do this.

Five years after "Carelian Satanist Madness" the Satanic Warmaster returns!
For some of you the Warmaster was never gone, but those of us that only keep track of the albums have had to wait for a long time.

After the intro it's straight down memory lane. Well, perhaps not for those of you that didn't rape the shit out of "Tyrannendunkel" when it was released. Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't "True Blackness" all over again. What I'm talking about is the style + feeling I get when the keyboards hit hard in "Satan's Werewolf", that primordial, germanic feeling.

The sound & style of Satanic Warmaster has always been compared to LLN bands and it's still there. More than once while listening to this album I've had to resist the urge to go look through my old FMP catalogues searching for old Vlad Tepes ads.

Satanic Warmaster is more than a mere copy of what has already been done. Paying homage to what you like isn't bad as long as you put something of your own into the mix. Does the Satanic Tyrant Werwolf manage that and once again slap the faces of his detractors? Yeah, I'd say he does.

If you still have reservations about Satanic Warmaster or just don't want to check this album out for whatever reason, so be it. However, if you are new to the game I'd say "Satan's Werewolf" and "Utug-Hul" are good haunts to hang out in.

HAERESIARCH OF DIS

HAERESIARCH OF DIS
DENUNTIATUS CINIS
Moribund

You know, it's easier said that done trying to dismiss the United States Black Metal scene these days. I'm not saying everything's gold over there but it's a helluva lot stronger than it used to be.

At first glance "Denuntiatus Cinis" might come across as a pretty upfront Black Metal album if you don't pay attention. HoD are one of those bands, or projects as this is a one man operation, that might just make a bit higher than most with it's unorthodox take on Black Metal. HoD take the foundations of the 2nd wave and add new layers creating a very bizarre and avant-garde album.

Think of the early days Emperor, Arcturus in minority and Fleurety playing Irish folk music. Turn on, tune in, drop out.

BLOODY SIGN
CHAOS ECHOES
Blood Harvest

Let's do a small round-up here before we begin things. 15 years and going. 3 albums and a long trail of demos under it's belt. Not surprising since the guys in Bloody Sign waited for 10 years before actually releasing the first album.

Five years later and two albums later I finally have take the time to get aquatinted with Bloody Sign and instantly repent not having done so ages ago. Dark Death Metal, technical with a bit of a ritualistic edge to it.

"Strings of ancient wisdom
Plucked by the air and water gods
Skins beaten in the time of darkness
Blessed by woods and fire"

With their third album I'd say the members of Bloody Sign have stumbled upon the right formula to produce ritualistic Death Metal magic!

LUSTRE

LUSTRE
A GLIMPSE OF GLORY
De Tenebrarum Principio

Medieval dungeon music. Having gone through quite a few listens with this album it seems to me someone has sunk into the mid nineties back-catalogue of Cold Meat Industry and refuses to be saved from the vortex of heavy keyboards, fuzzy guitars and harrowing screams.

This is ambient black metal and on his second album Nachtzeit, the mastermind behind Lustre, shows his appreciation of all things keyboardist and his affection for the nature. He does well in creating an album that comes close to rival Burzum at it's most atmospheric.
By no means a carbon copy of any sorts, "A Glimpse of Glory" holds it's own and will be put on the player frequently by the aficionados of atmospheric black arts.

You saw him in Nuclear Desecration!
You heard him in Hate Kommand!
You felt him in Street Force!

Now get ready to witness the merciless onslaught of Nocturnal Ghoul, Spirit of Darkness! The meanest motherfucker in Fontana, California!

What's with this guy and the two part names?!

Now he's back without his mustache ov death with another take on another sub-genre of some genre of Metal! You have to give props to the guy, though, as he isn't bad at what he does and he manages to create a rather vile atmosphere with this debut of his latest project.

"What about the music?" I hear the crowd scream! Anxiety is building up as the lynch mob builds up! "We want blood!" they scream. "Give us nocturnal blood!" screams The Black Pope himself out from his devastated grave! Yeah, what about the music? "It's loud, it's rough, it's raw! Now that's what I call metal!" as a former editor of Kerrang!!! once said while preparing viewers for videos of King Diamond, Annihilator and many others.
The music is necro, it's rough and it's raw. It's pretty much Blasphemy + Black Witchery + Archgoat + a shitload of other bands I don't know. Check it out, live it, love it. Dress up in your hoodie with a  beer and a bulletbelt! Worship darkness! Spit on graves!

KROHM

If this movie hasn't found it's way into your VCR, DVD or personal computer then it's time you rectify that mistake.

Now, let's go quickly over things here. The main attraction here is Krohm. I've spent the little time I have had during the last few days listening to the split with Tenebrae in Perpetuum. Great split. No brag, just fact.

I hear a bit of John Murphy in Numinas' work. I could be wrong, I hear John Murphy pretty much everywhere, just like Haley Joel Osment saw dead people everywhere.

This is what has been on my mind for the last few days.
This should also be on your mind. I've spent more time on Krohm, though, but I will make my way to PiT!

GHOST

I've spent most of this weekend listening to a band that I own not a physical release by. I'm speaking of course of the Swedish Satanrockers GHOST that are, according to their MySpace site...

.."Ghost is the name of a devil worshipping ministry that - in order to spread their unholy gospels, and furthermore, to trick mankind into believing that the end is ultimately a good thing - have decided to use the ever so popular rock music medium as a way to exploit their means. With sexually pulsating rock music and romantic lyrics that for the most part speaks about the Antichrist coming to life and other sacriligious themes, the groups' intention is simply to spread hell the most effective way - through entertainment. The groups' wish is that especially the innocent and easily manipulated children take a liking to their music. And they will..."

I haven't been this exited about a new devil worshipping band since I heard Hour of 13 with their diabolical manifestations! Climb on top the trapezoid! Worship the Devil! Give praise to Satan! Listen to Ghost!

DISGUSTING

PROMO MMX
TERRORGHOUL PRODUCTIONS

Tonight we praise the Lord Satan and present an offering of Disgusting proportions. It's a full moon as well as a full meal. Three songs are offered here in the guise of two. The first song is the only original song here, the other two that follow are Bathory covers. We unleash the belt buckle.

The Disgusting song begins and I am taken back to Ophthalamia. The Swedish doom(ob)scures are quickly thrown out the window and instead of mid-paced doom we are presented with mid-paced death. All is presented within a wall of muddy rehearsal space sound that surprisingly manages to offer a bit more than just a singer, a guitar and a snare drum.

The Bathory covers that follow go okay, although I do wish Steve Disgust, Tom Terror & Gabe Rape would have spent a bit more time confined within the tomb that is their rehearsal space. Another original song would have been great to hear.

Bow now as we offer Disgusting to the Lord of vanity and deceit. Let the extreme makeover of malevolence begin here! Let that be your guide to further Disgust!

GIG REPORT: FORTÍÐ, ATRUM, SVARTIDAUÐI, PISSANTHROPE, CHAO.

CHAO
I arrived to the venue about half an hour after the scheduled start of the show and feared I had missed Chao, which were first in the line-up. That fear was unnecessary as everything was pretty silent when I arrived with band members and promoters waiting for more people to show up.

When things finally started it was business as usual in the Chao camp: Black metal! In my opinion Chao are the closest thing musically any Icelandic black metal band could be to “orthoblack” but they aren’t that really. They reek of it, sure, but at the same time manage to avoid many of the traps of the genre.

The band was really tight tonight and put on a good show. The members were drenched in blood and the vocalist as putrid as ever! There was a song in there I didn’t recognize and that was a pleasant surprise!

The band has already recorded it’s first demo but as financially unstable as the members are, as most of them are students, they lack the funds to give it the release it deserves. Anyone interested in helping them out should check out their link and contact them via MySpace or just drop me a line and I’ll get your email over to the guys.

CHAO ON MYSPACE

PISSANTHROPE
Now, this is a new band, so I’ll give them a bit of leeway for that. However, this band contains members of Carpe Noctem and ex-members of Svartidauði and Bölvættur so I don’t really get why it went like it went. The promoter of this event was pretty psyched about this band but after this gig I’m not really seeing why.

This wasn’t exactly terrible, but I’m not really sure what it was, I’m not even sure the members know what was going on. I’m just gonna regard this as a blooper and let the next gig be the first gig.

SVARTIDAUÐI
STD were not on the bill tonight but it was great they showed up and performed a short set consisting of a single song that was as hypnotizing as it was great! I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, that it’s a damn shame they only have one demo out now as their new stuff totally kills the old stuff that Melas Khole released. If I could I would have bootlegged this gig on t-shirt. Special edition.

SVARTIDAUÐI ON MYSPACE

ATRUM
Atrum are Atrum. Every gig is a guaranteed slaughter and it’s given that you’ll get your money’s worth when you see them! But, every time I sit down after a gig and try to describe them I spend a lot of time just trying to think of the right way to describe them.

Atrum are Panzer Division Atrum. They pretty much slay every time they play live and it will be interesting to witness their reBIRTH on the 27th of July. Contact the band for more info on that!

ATRUM ON MYSPACE

Voluspa Part III: Fall of The AgesFORTÍÐ
Now, this was the main attraction tonight. A bit of info first: Fortíð is the brainchild of Einar “Eldur” Thorberg which emigrated from Iceland to Norway a couple of years back. This move gave him the chance to take Fortíð to a new level and recruit members for a live line-up.

Tonight the band focused mainly on the new album, which was released earlier this year through Schwarzdorn, but old songs like “Víg Baldurs” made it through. I guess it’s because of the venue, but it seemed like Fortíð didn’t really get too much time to play. At least not as much time as a headliner should get, in my opinion. Perhaps it just went by too fast, I don’t really know. All I know is I would have liked to hear more of Fortíð’s epic heathen metal and it’s a pity that I will not be able to see them perform at Eistnaflug next week.

FORTÍÐ ON MYSPACE

All in all this was a pretty good gig but the promoter really should remember that sometimes less is more. Giving people their money’s worth doesn’t necessarily mean putting a shitload of bands on the bill and dragging things on. It’s great people have the heart and interest to do something like this but overdoing stuff can really kill things.

Personal faves: The subtle tribute of Chao’s bass player to Celtic Frost. The public announcement of Pissanthrope’s singer that he had to take a leak before the set, nice to see people so considerate. Last but not least a big horns up to the girl in the front row during Fortíð’s set, it’s the die hard fans that count!

SABBATH ASSEMBLY

Perhaps, just perhaps, you read my review on Sabbath Assembly’s debut on the Halifax Collect blog. If you did you realized this is something I always wanted to witness. To be brought headfirst into something that existed only in the past. Or so you thought! Jex & Xtian rePROCCESSed the hymns and I managed to sneak in a few questions to them. I deliberately kept this short with the decision to force you to check out their hymns. Do it now!

Well, it was great seeing this project come together but how did it all come about? What was it that drew you to The Process and their views on the way to stabilize the essence of man? What are your personal religious views and how did that fit with this project?

Jex: There is so much about the Church that interests me - from the way it began, to their beautifully designed magazines, to the complex story of the woman behind it all. I relate to several of the teachings of The Process - teaching the importance of personal responsibility as a way to better navigate through life and teaching the value of self-unification. "LOVE SEX FEAR DEATH", a book recently published by Feral House, written by one of the Church's original members, is Timothy Wyllie's first hand account of what it was like to be a member of the Process. A member for roughly 14 years, I found his accounts very intriguing. Inside the book, were reprints from some of the original Process magazines (for which his book was named), photographs of members from all different chapters, and the sheet music to 3 original Process hymns. The Hymns themselves are very evocative, filled with imagery, and the melodies are beautiful. Many of them are praise songs to Christ, Satan, Lucifer and Jehovah all at once. This was something I had never come across before. The Process utilized these four deities to categorize the opposing sides of the self. We asked Timothy if he knew of any recordings that might exist and he said, to the best of his knowledge, they had never been recorded. With that, we began to conceive of "Restored To One". We played through the hymns (of which there are more than 60) to determine which of them felt like a good fit for us. We also contacted several original Process members, the ones we could find, and asked them which ones were their favorites. We continued whittling down the list of hymns until we settled on these. In connection with the release of the book, we were part of a recreation of an original Process Mass with the hymns set inside.

Xtian: I like the way you state your question: "...to stabilize the essence of man." One of the more important achievements of the Process Church was to point human beings towards an acceptance of their own wholeness. Traditional religious paths leave practitioners split, constantly measuring good vs bad, dark vs light, and thus caught in an ethical dichotomy. The stability the Process Church encouraged could be discovered only by taking an honest look at oneself, allowing for understanding of one's motivations and behaviors on the deepest level, peeling back the layers without fear or judgment based on a particular moral code and really learning about the self - which of course points the way to the Self. By means of this process one could move closer to the essence of humanity, and gain compassion for the instincts and intuitions of oneself and others - thus freeing us from the crippling cycle of self-judgment and judgment of others. This is the connection to my own personal religious view, which is that we all must be free of the mechanisms that weigh us down in anxiety, and these are most often moral....

You seem to believe strongly in the powers behind the hymns you have rePROCESSed, but what is it that you are trying to express with your creation? Do you believe that the teachings of The Process are needed more in our "got-to-have-it" now society than they were back when The Process was at it's prime? Does man need faith more now than back in the seventies?

Jex: Few people outside the Church had ever heard these hymns before. The ideas of the Process Church were unconventional and shocking in the late 60s/early 70's, but they are still pretty extreme even by today's standards. It was very important to us that our renditions maintain the authentic passion woven through them. My hope is that we were able to usher them into a place where their relevance can be felt today. To ignore our darker impulses is to remain blind to the truth. To take on shame for feeling these dark impulses is to punish ourselves for a thing that is natural. If an impulse is natural, whether or not to have that impulse is beyond our control. Therefore, we are best served if we make the choice to embrace all of the sides within us. This is not to say that we ought to act on all of our impulses simply because they are natural. Rather, it is to say that we are in control of how we choose to apply this knowledge to our daily lives. Acknowledging and comprehending personal responsibility is a timeless pursuit.

Xtian: It is difficult to assess how much faith people "need" in a given time because the outward display of faith has little to do with faith and more to do with performance. I think that we can know this answer only in the present moment by seeing what it is that we need as far as faith in our own lives; and what we feel will be similar to what others are feeling. We are existing now in a particularly empirical time characterized by a faith that the development of machines will move us towards a feeling of greater completeness. My intuition is that the vacuousness of this line of thinking is being exposed, and our faith will return to something invisible, something internal....

Xtian & Jex seem to be the core of the band with the rest of the members not as involved in the process of songwriting etc. As you have been using a variety of members in your live performances, will the line up that is now remain or will you continue changing members as needed?

Jex: We have been very fortunate to get to work with a number of talented musicians and have enjoyed having the freedom to play the hymns with these different groups of people and in a variety of different settings. It all helped to inform the sound. We hope to continue doing this.

While you rePROCESS the hymns you seem to stay focused on the era they were created in. Is there a possibility with further rePROCESSing that you will perhaps venture beyond the musical realms you are in now or do you feel most comfortable with the Sabbath Assembly where you are now? Have you set any plans for the future concerning the band or will Sabbath Assembly be something you will work on sporadically without any haste?

Jex: It was quite an experience working on these hymns. I feel honored to have helped them come to light for new ears. As for future recordings, could be... and as far as to how those recordings might sound... the hymns on Restored to One sound the way they do because as we continued to play the hymns, we continued to allow them to change. The sheet music is fairly basic and the more we played through the hymns the more we connected with them, the more we were able to bring our authentic selves to the music. As the hymns grew to sound informed by the bits of ourselves that crept in, we made sure to allow the passion woven into them to inform us of what they wanted to sound like. If we record any more Process hymns in the future, I plan to keep with that style of working. The future of the band is open.

Xtian: We will continue to work with these hymns so long as we find in them a sentiment that mirrors our own personal growth. The hymns we chose for Restored to One all had an immediate resonance with an aspect of our lives, so slowly now we are beginning to read through additional hymns and feeling for that same spark of connection.

ENFORCER
DIAMONDS

I discovered this awesome swedish band in early 2009 as i stumbled on their debut album „Into The Night“ from the year before and i loved them instantly. Enforcer are playing Heavy Metal, the way it should be played and i have to say, i havent heard anything better in this genre for the last decade.

In May they released their second album „Diamonds“ and it is simply awesome. If you wanna compere it to their debut it is maybe a little bit more commercial but defenetly not in a bad way. It starts with the crusher „Midnight Vice“, goes over „Katana“, which is my favourite song, to „Diamonds“, an awesome instrumental compareable to Iron Maiden’s Transylvania and ends with the catchy „Take Me To Hell“. The songs are as catchy and heavy as on their first album but also have some nice slow parts. All in all, defenetly your money worth so go and get it. Enforcer is also currently on tour so dont miss them, they are rockin‘ the hell out of you live, promise.

PROFANATICA
DISGUSTING BLASPHEMIES AGAINST GOD
Hell’s Headbangers

First a small confession, I haven’t heard anything by Profanatica since Ledney released the band’s debut under the Havohej moniker. I used to be a huge Profanatica nut and the stuff on the split with Masacre and the Havohej album pretty much did enough for me.

Now, since then the band has kept a low profile but released a bit like a split with Impiety and a full length some three years ago that totally went past me. Therefore I cannot compare this album with the debut, which was also released by Hell's Headbangers.

From the first second this album is like the second chapter to “Dethrone the Son of God”. “Black Cum” splashes on the tail of “...the Son of God” and from then on it’s as if the game is on, Profanatica is in it’s prime! Combining the old aura that was evident in the old recordings of the band with a production a bit similar to that on the “Black Perversion” ep of Havohej, Profanatica’s 2010 offering could well stand the test of time.

1349
DEMONOIR

I was introduced to 1349 the summer of 2006 with the Hellfire album. A well produced norwegian black metal album that stars the legendary Frost on drums. They gained a great recognition with the record and I can honestly say that they are also a massive live band. They have the basic black metal costumes on stage; covered in corpsepaint, singer who always wears his ripped Hellhammer t-shirt and of course alot of smoke throughout the whole set. Well then. There was a great expectation for next album, Revelation of the Black Flame(2009) but unfortunately it wasn´t as good as their last albums. The main difference was adding dark ambience into their work with not so much of a success. If you are expecting a blasting black metal album with fast drums and evil riffs, you get dissappointed and you get tired of listening because of all the ambient instrumental songs.
But there was still hope for the future of 1349. Demonoir reached into the black light in may this year. Before the release they announced that they had worked really hard on the album with a help from Hellhammer/Celtic Frosts, Tom G. „Warrior“ and the result is, in my opinion, an excellent piece of work. Starting with a intro that leads to the „Atomic Chapel“ a catchy, fast song, especially when it slows down very early in the track, 0:37. It´s a special atmosphere, like entering hell. I can also mention When I was Flesh, a fast song with blast beats – classic 1349 song. Overall it´s a good album that leaves positive marks - but the only thing that drags the album down are the ambient instrumentals, „Tunnel of Set XII-XVII“. Anyway, Demonoir is a unique black metal album that´s worth listening to and stands out as one of the finest albums of the year.

BLEEDING FIST
MACABRUM BESTIA EX ABYSSUS

When seeing the name of the band it’s hard to imagine that what you have in front of you is a black metal band. Sure, the never-fail latin album title is there but still a linger of doubt can be found.
There’s no doubt about it, however, when you put the album on what this is all about! Straightforward & violent Slovenian black metal. I can’t really put down any one influence that’s found right away, the band seems to be an omnivore when it comes to inspiration and what you find here is a little bit of the old jewels heavily wrapped up in new packages. There's a bit of Sweden here, a bit of Germany, some “Satan” here and there and to wrap things up a Hellhammer cover. Not bad, but not something there’s still a bit of time until Bleeding Fist will sweep me completely of my feet.
